        CSWA-S  October Lunch Meeting  12:00-1:00pm
   Wednesday, October 25, 2006

Anger Management is generally a misnomer.  The reality is that we hope to
encourage people to manage the behavior that is symptomatic of the emotion
generally considered anger.  However, what I've found is that it's much more
complicated and seems to be related to the inability to express fears and
anxieties which then manifest themselves, outwardly projected, in what
appears to be anger.  Simply put, "I feel scared/hurt/vulnerable/picked on
and so I must rail against the world to protect myself"  I've found that
this is generally the most common cause of expressed anger behavior.  The
majority of anger management "classes" are between 12 weeks to 18 months.
And we expect this rage to be "fixed"  In my work with victimizers I've
found that combining the cognitive behavioral approach with simple increase
in attentiveness to self and body responses that persons can learn to be
more respectful of their anger and express it more effectively.

Topic(s):          'Why it is not really managing your anger'
Presenter(s):     Stephanie Cruwys, LCSW

September Lunch Meeting :

Annual CSWA-S / NASW-SEG Legislative Luncheon

Wednesday, September 27, 2006,  12:00-1:30pm   (extended time)

Legislation has a direct impact on what we do as social workers regardless of the setting in which we work. Clinical Social Work Association of Savannah – May  2006

May Lunch Meeting

Eating disorders can be mystifying and difficult to treat.  Since the early part of the last century, we’ve seen a steady increase in the incidence of anorexia nervosa and more recently bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorders.   Clinicians are often perplexed in the face of clients who appear emaciated yet insist that they are fat and who persist in life threatening behavior yet seem oblivious to the seriousness of their disorder.

Ann Davis LPC has been working with individuals with eating disorders for many years and will share her insights and experience in treating people with eating disorders at our May lunch meeting.

  April Lunch Meeting

Francine Shapiro accidentally discovered a phenomenon that is basic to Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy while walking by a lakeside. She developed it into a full fledged therapeutic modality that is useful for treating, among other things, trauma.  Find out about the phenomenon that started the EMDR phenomena at the April Lunch Meeting.

Helen Morton ACSW, LCSW, an experienced clinician from Brunswick who uses EMDR        will give a broad overview of the treatment at our April lunch meeting.

20th Annual Conference a Success

The 20th Annual Conference of the Clinical Social Work Association of Savannah featured Bob Bertolino PhD.  Bertolino spoke on collaborative change oriented psychotherapy and his message was relevant for all clinicians from the graduate student in a practicum to the most seasoned of us. The conference was co-hosted by the Southeast Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers and the Social Work Department of Savannah State University.

Our thanks go to all of the CSWAS / NASW members and SSU students whose labors made it a success, to the Coastal Georgia Center and to our sponsors:

A Note from the President

The Clinical Social Work Association of Savannah needs you!  Yes, you.

I grew up in Tennessee and went to school there so I’m not a Bulldog, an Eagle, a Tiger, a Yellow Jacket, a Gamecock, a Gator or any of the other members of the collegiate mascot menagerie. I’m a Volunteer.

All of the members of the board and the various CSWAS committees are also volunteers - small V but big contribution - and are directly responsible for the growth of CSWAS and the quality programming that this association offers.  Now, growth in and of itself is not a primary goal, but a larger organization can offer higher quality events for lower prices than a small organization can, so growth has its benefits – and drawbacks. The primary drawback is that it takes more people to keep a larger organization running.

When I moved to Savannah, I joined CSWAS and we met for lunch meetings around a single long table at Greenbriar – we have grown! Some of the current volunteers are ready to back off and some must leave office according to our by-laws.  Those who remain must eventually move on to other pursuits and besides, all organizations need new blood and fresh ideas.

I invite you to seriously consider volunteering some time to the Clinical Social Work Association of Savannah.  Volunteer with a buddy and ‘job share’ a position. If you indicated a willingness to volunteer on your membership application, please remind us.  If you just simply want to continue to be able to come to the lunch meetings, Saturday Institutes, social events and the Annual Conference, consider volunteering because, without volunteers, none of these events happen. Besides, you get to work and hang out with some of the greatest folks in coastal Georgia and you improve services to our clients by helping to facilitate quality continuing education programs for mental health professionals in our community.

Please contact Jan McWilliams, our Vice President at p.mcwilliams@comcast.net , 898 7994 or Donna Hammontree, our Past President and nominations chair at 350 5616 hammodo2@memorialhealth.com

Thanks to all who have volunteered and to those who are going to!

Denham Receives McCauley Award

Congratulations to CSWAS member Kay Denham for being tapped for the McCauley Award by the St. Joseph’s / Candler Healthcare System.

Jammed January Starts the Year Off Right

January 2006 was filled with CSWA-S activities that fed the mind, body and spirit of members.  First, Chris Foley LCSW conducted the Winter Saturday Institute at Hospice Savannah.  Her presentation on helping people and families with loss of a loved one was superb.

The January Lunch Meeting featured two presentations.  The first was a presentation of a $6,000 check to the University of Georgia School of Social Work to support the Tisha Abolt Graduate Assistantship. The money was raised through the Tribute to Tisha BBQ last November. Linda Barnes LCSW and Carl Pedigo, Attorney then presented information on the collaborative approach in helping divorcing couples get through the process with minimal collateral damage.

Finally, the Annual Oyster Roast offered lots of CE (culinary excellence) credits to the attendees.  Thanks to all who helped make these events such successes.
